International Conference on Nuclear Energy 2025 (ICNE 2025) Strengthens ASEAN’s Nuclear Energy Readiness

PETALING JAYA: The International Conference on Nuclear Energy 2025 (ICNE 2025), organized by Nestmatrix Solution, was held on 11 November 2025 at Sunway Resort Hotel, gathering regional leaders, experts, and industry professionals to discuss ASEAN’s pathway toward adopting nuclear energy as part of its sustainable energy transition.

Themed “Paving the Way for a Sustainable Energy Source in ASEAN”, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof today, the conference emphasized ASEAN’s collective commitment to energy security and sustainability in line with the ASEAN 2025 Vision and Malaysia’s Energy Transition Roadmap. The event provided a timely platform for collaboration between government, and industry to strengthen regional readiness for civilian nuclear development.

Key Highlights and Speakers

Raja Dato' (Dr) Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan, Principal Advisor The eCEOs and Former Director IAEA Delivered an insightful session titled “Nuclear Energy in Malaysia: Powering the Future, Shaping Public Perception”, focusing on Malaysia’s nuclear journey, and the importance of nuclear energy as a viable and sustainable power source.

Dato’ Ir. Ts. Razib Dawood, Executive Director, ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) Presented on “Civilian Nuclear Energy Programme in ASEAN”, highlighting the region’s growing interest in nuclear energy.

Madam Monalija Binti Kostor, Deputy Director General, Department of Atomic Energy Malaysia (Atom Malaysia) Shared Malaysia’s approach to establishing a strong regulatory framework and compliance structure to ensure the safe and transparent development of nuclear technology.

Dr. Chen Pu, Deputy Director of Nuclear Energy Development Department China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas Ltd. Delivered a presentation on “China’s Development of SMR Technology and Support to ASEAN Stakeholders”, detailing China’s advancements in small modular reactors (SMRs) and opportunities for regional collaboration.

Dr. Savalaxs (Sara) Supa-Amornkul, Director of Business Development, AtkinsRéalis, Canada Spoke on “Energy Evolution 5.0: Powering ASEAN’s Sustainable Future with Natural Uranium”, emphasizing technological innovation and uranium’s role in next-generation clean energy systems.

Mr. Yoh-shik Nam, Vice President, Korea Nuclear Association for International Cooperation (KNA) concluded the conference with a presentation on “Korea’s Nuclear Supply Chain Ecosystem”, sharing key lessons and opportunities for Malaysia’s future nuclear industry.
ICNE 2025 brought together representatives from the Department of Atomic Energy Malaysia, the ASEAN Centre for Energy, the China National Nuclear Corporation, AtkinsRealis Canada, and the Korea Nuclear Association for International Cooperation highlighting the cross-sectoral importance of nuclear energy development.
Throughout the conference, discussions centered on four key areas — sustainable energy and climate goals, safety and regulatory frameworks, construction readiness, and environmental impact.
Nuclear energy will play a vital role in helping Malaysia achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050, complementing renewable energy sources and supporting long-term energy security.
The event concluded with a shared consensus that ASEAN must work collaboratively to ensure safety, transparency, and public trust as it transitions toward nuclear energy.
ICNE 2025 successfully set the stage for continued dialogue, knowledge sharing, and regional cooperation — paving the way for a cleaner, more secure, and sustainable energy future.
